NYC in pictures, pt. 2

For some, museums are the most boring place on earth, but I LOVE THEM.  When we went to NYC, D and I had a list of the top 5 things we absolutely wanted to do, and #1 was going to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  It's sooooo big you really have to prioritize what continents / time periods you want to visit and even then, it's just room after room of exhibits and I'd go off course every two minutes.  It's just SO hard to believe that thousands and thousands of years ago, someone carved these amazing statues, painted portraits, and wore the jewelry that is now protected by glass.  It's also hard to believe that so many B.C. civilizations were so inventive, organized, and artistic.  We went through ancient Greece and Egypt, to 19th century Europe, to Colonial America, to armor and weapons, and ancient Persia, etc.  It's all fascinating.

Isn't it all inspiring? I can't wait to go back.

sign of the times

Standard Tuesday Night:  glass of wine, Teen Mom 2 and hot shower while David is at Coach's celebrating his weekly "Man Night."

yep, he has a 'man night' and yes, i watch Teen Mom 2.  we both indulge in our guilty pleasures.  his involves shooting the shit with his bro-friends over some bud light, and mine is watching dysfunctional co-dependent teenage girls try to raise a family.  win win.

as much as i love that guy to pieces, it is nice to have a night where i don't have to feel guilty about leaving work late, i don't have to talk to anyone, i can watch the stupidest tv show ever, and i don't have to feel like i need to be doing something productive.

plus, i like D a little bit more when he comes home from man night.  it's been a while since we've seen each other, he's a little buzzed, he missed me, and i like to drill him and find out what he talked about with his friends and if i was on topic.  he's especially honest and happy on tuesdays.

that's all.  just a tuesday.  i wish life could stay this happy and uncomplicated forever.  i want to be married, grad schooled, and have babies up the wazoo, but oh man, i know i'm going to miss days like this. easy peasy, quiet and sweet.

on a completely different note, have you heard of SOPA and PIPA?  def a sign we are in the 21st century, huh?  may the blackouts begin...

New York State of Mind

yikes.  You know when something big is around the corner and you just can't wait but you know if you snoop it's going to ruin your genuine reaction to the surprise?  my life story.  9 times out of 10 I go snooping and always know what my presents will be, (poor david can't get anything past me) but for this special surprise I'm controlling myself because I know it's a big deal and don't want to ruin it.

of course I'M the one who got us to NY, and I'M the one who picked it out, AND HE EVEN LET ME TRY IT ON IN THE DARK!  so now all that's left is the traditional 'get down on one knee' moment and then begins 2012!

please and thank you

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM NYC!

and so merry christmas

that mean old dave is prematurely taking the tree down the day after Christmas

It was the best Christmas I can remember in a really long time.  It was by far the best Christmas of my adult life. My family came over to the house in the morning and relaxed with muffins, presents and the Christmas Story, and then we all headed over to D's mom's house for a combined family dinner (to die for) and then my family left and D's family opened their presents.  It was amazing.  I wasn't driving all over town trying to please everyone and had no stress about having our families together for the first time.  No tears all day!

My parents are loners and we don't have a big family so they are usually scrambling for Xmas dinner plans or staying home with a bean burrito.  My mom kept saying it was her best Xmas ever and she was sooooooo happy to be around a big family and she really enjoyed talking to everyone.  My dad was on his BEST behavior and even played the piano in the background as everyone got ready for dinner.  It was all very sweet and in contrast to last year, D and I got a lot of quality time in and were really happy that our families got along great.  Can you believe it?  6.5 years together and we are just now combining the holiday?

Also, we got a dud of a tree this year and it has been a present fire danger for the past three weeks.  D took it down so we could start up the fireplace without risking a fireball in the living room.  It's fine, we're going out of town this weekend and don't want to leave it up anyways, but it was a little too soon for me.  I played Sinatra Christmas carols and reminisced on the past few weeks with our first real tree, our first Xmas with Lola girl, and my whirlwind of a month since coming back from India.

Christmas Eve posole

Dave in Christmas present heaven
now we're getting ready for our New Year's Eve trip to New York City this Saturday!  soooooo excited.  All week I've been thinking, "this time next week I'll be in NYC mmmmm...."  I've ALWAYS wanted to go, and this year we finally made it happen.  We'll be there for a week and plan to see all the sites and buildings and parks and museums and food and people.  I love taking vacations with just the two of us and feeling like we're all alone, no one knows us, and it's an experience that only we will remember.

Home Aloneskies

a very heartfelt thanks goes to Jessica for saying my few and far between blog posts should award any kind of 'versatile' recognition.

The Versatile Blogger Award goes to blogs that are newly discovered and offer some fun or inspiring ideas.

The Rules
1. Thank the person that nominated you with a link back to them.
2. Tell everyone seven things about yourself.
3. Pass the award on to 15 newly discovered blogs and let them know they've received the award.

all weekend i was thinking of what my response will be.  a business as usual post?  reflections about india?  something holiday themed and overloaded with more pictures?  the longer i have to think about it, the more time my inspirations escape me and i just never get around to sitting down and plugging one out.  but fortunately for this Dec. 20, my lunch date fell through and i'm here at home with some spare time to share some things about myself.

This weekend David went snowboarding and i finally had the extra time i've been asking for to get some things striked from my to-do list.  Of course when i do get quiet unscheduled time all i want to do is sit around and watch movies and paint my nails.  I'm THE laziest person on the planet.  When i'm home alone i'm in the judgement free zone, i can get away with anything, and discover new things:

1. home uniform:   mismatched socks, crumbling mud mask, inside out shirt (to hide the spilled cereal milk)

2. painted my nails a lovely nude shade which excuses me from cleaning for at least 2-4 hrs while they dry completely

3.  oh my god.  the most productive thing i did was clean out the hallway medicine cabinet.  i seriously need to let go of things.  three full unopened bottles of vitamin C that expired in 2005, a lot of percoset from 2007, old perfume that smells like rubbing alcohol, $30 lady vitamins that expired in 2009 and smell nastay, homemade soap bars that smell like nothing, lotion and body mist from Bath & Body (i haven't shopped there in ten years), sunscreen from 2001, and tons and tons and tons of olllllllllld make up.  and even though it's obvious this stuff is old and i haven't used any of it since moving in with Dave 3.5 years ago, it's hard to throw it away because my hard earned college dollars bought everything in the trash bag and i threw away $250+ worth of expired / half used stuff. yikes.  and you know one of my weaknesses?  everytime i go out of town i buy travel sized everything, and then use half of it, or bring home the little shampoos from the hotel, and then i have hundreds of half used tiny products that i'll never use because i always go buy new ones and don't want to use the old ones.  i've seen plenty of 'hoarders' episodes to know this is how the disease starts so i chucked them all in the trash. (as hoarders often do, i "justified" keeping the vicks vapor rub - exp. 1998 - because it looks like it's still potent -- eventhough i've never seen either of us use it, "we might need it someday.")

4.  blasted SBTRKT (my new fave) and some Dean Martin Christmas tunes.

5.  polished the furniture for upwards of 1.5 hrs only because I could watch "Home Alone 2" at the same time.

5.5.  folded laundry (left over from India 3 weeks ago) for 1.5 hrs only because I could watch "Dirty Jobs" at the same time.

6.  around 1:30pm I made myself a breakfast burrito and some coffee using the last 12 coffee beans and some milk that "expired" three days earlier.  it left an odd taste in my mouth, but i drank the whole cup (this is a sign i'm turning into my mother).

7.  read 'Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang' in the bathtub.  (Can't say much about it so far, but it was a guilty pleasure purchase while i was in the Chicago airport.  i needed something to foil my third world adventures)

7.5.  mmmmmm ate Dion's for dinner.  soooooo good.  took the dogs to a friend's house to watch the lobo game.  came home and put my home uniform back on.

8.  drank some Shiners and left over wine while watching 'Up All Night' episodes.  Decided i was going to sleep on the couch because the leather is warmer than an empty bed.  Got some blankets and put the heater on a timer, had a restless sleep.

9.  the next morning D called to ask why i'd called at 2:49 am and that his phone ring woke everyone up.  I denied it but then later looked at my call log and see that in a fit of sleep talking, i actually placed two calls at 2:49 am.  first call was to David, second call was to Dion's.  I don't know that I've ever laughed at myself all alone, embarrassed for myself, at myself.  I have absolutely no memory of making calls but do remember waking up and wondering why my phone was on the floor instead of the coffee table.  In true girlfriend fashion I found a way to put it back on David and asked him why he didn't answer my call?  it could've been an emergency! why else would i call at 2:49 am?!  he said 'because i knew you were drunk / sleep dialing'.  liar.

10.  is it too early for new year's resolutions?  well if it isn't obvious already, my goal is to drink less before bed.  in all honesty our wine habit has gotten out of hand.  it's safe to say we spend more money on wine than we do on groceries.  a whole bottle every night.  and if we're out, we go to the store.  don't get me wrong, we don't "need" it, it's just that we both work our butts off at two ^*(&!@#!$@#$ jobs and at the end of the night we like to unwind with some netflix, wine, bruschetta, fancy cheese, or a steamed artichoke.  sound snobby?  we've graduated from beer, quesadillas, and chips and salsa to a more sophisticated pallet.  but we all know that eating and drinking late at night = big butts, so my goal is to sip our way through 3 bottles a week, instead of 7, and to take it easy on the snacks, then we'll go from there.

this was an especially big snack night for us (i swear it's not always this much food)...I think it was a Tuesday, and neither of us had eaten lunch or dinner.

see, look?  i wrote a whole blog post!  the main reason being that my house is already clean and i don't feel guilty writing for an hour.  now, if only my xmas shopping was finished...
